Macomb County Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month

How To Get Rodents Out Of The Attic

When you have rodents living in your attic, you will likely notice. You should either hear them running around the attic or perhaps you will hear chewing or scratching sounds. You will want to get the rodents out of your attic as soon as possible before they cause damage to it. Depending on the type of rodent, you may have to deal with chewed wood, insulation, or wires in addition to animal waste and leftover food. Luckily, it is easy to get these animals out of your attic with the proper tools and experience.

Find Their Entrance
If you plan on taking care of the rodents yourself, you will first have to figure out where they are entering your home. Remember that as long as one entry point remains, you won’t solve your problem. Instead, the animals will simply return. This means that you have to check the entire building, focusing on the attic. Check the exterior and interior structure, roof joints, AC chases, your chimney, vents, plumbing, and anything else. You can also look for signs of rodents that may point out that you are close to their entrances. Gnawing, droppings, or grease from the animal can all be found by the entry points.

Option One: Seal All The Entrances
Trapping and releasing is among the most popular methods for removing rodents from your attic. This begins by sealing up every single potential entry point. Seal any hole you find since smaller rodents like mice can fit through a whole that is just a quarter of an inch across.

Set Up Traps
Now is the time to decide what you will be doing with the rodents. For most rodents, you will want to trap and release them using live cage traps. The only thing to keep in mind, however, is that rats and mice tend to be numerous, so you will need either a large number of traps or some larger traps that let multiple animals in without allowing them to leave.

Because rodents like mice and rats breed so quickly, some people, including wildlife experts, will simply use lethal traps. If you go with this method, always opt for something that will kill the animal instantly, such as a snap trap. Poison or other methods like glue boards will lead to a slow and painful death, making them inhumane. No matter the type of trap you use, place them along the path that the rodents walk. They are creatures of habit and this will maximize the traps’ effectiveness.

Remove The Rodents
If you have chosen to trap the rodents in your attic, you have to remove them afterwards. In the case of live trapping, you will want to make sure that you have truly sealed up all entrances to your home and then release them outside. Keep in mind that if you relocate the rodents farther from your property, you will need to consult your local regulations before doing so. Relocating them to an unfamiliar area will also minimize their chances of survival. If you have used snap traps to kill the rodents instantly, then check the local regulations to see how you can dispose of them. In many areas, you can simply double bag the dead rodents and throw them out with your garbage but there may be other official recommendations.

Option Two: Try Exclusion
An alternative to trapping and releasing or using lethal traps to take care of the rodents in your attic is known as exclusion. This is the most commonly suggested method for larger rodents like squirrels. In cases where it is clear which entrance is the main one for the rodents, you will start by sealing up all of the other potential entry points. Then, you install a one-way door or exclusion device on the main entrance; the rodents can leave but not get back inside. After several days, all of the animals should have left. Double check they are all gone and then seal the remaining entry point.
